History of the CBWE

In 1998, local Virginia musicians Robert Arledge and Jim Paschall formed the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble to allow the many exceptional local amateur, professional and semi-professional musicians to perform and share their musical expertise with the local community. Outstanding high school student musicians are particularly welcomed and allowed to hone their talents as they pursue a passion they will be able to enjoy the rest of their lives. One of the band's traditions is to provide scholarships to deserving graduating student musicians that participate. Since inception, the Ensemble has become the Peninsula's premier community-based performing group, currently including almost 60 musicians and focusing on symphonic works. Five or six performances are offered to the public at various venues on the Virginia Peninsula. The band operates as a non-profit organization and donations are tax deductible.

Our Conductor

Dr. Marvin Western serves as the Artistic Director and Conductor of the Chesapeake Bay Wind Ensemble, an adult volunteer musical organization serving primarily the north Hampton Roads area (VA), a position he has held since March 2004. In this position, he follows in the footsteps of Jim Pascal and Robert Arledge, co-founders of the ensemble.

In addition, Dr. Western serves as assistant professor of music at Hampton University where he teaches music education courses and applied clarinet. He has also served as an adjunct professor on the faculties at Christopher Newport University and Elizabeth City State University. He is an active recitalist and chamber music performer, and the founding artistic director of the Virginia Chamber Music Academy. He also maintains an active private teaching practice.

Dr. Western holds the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts from Shenandoah University where he studied with Dr. Stephen Johnston. The title of his dissertation and lecture recital was The Music of Peter Schickele: An Analysis of his Music Involving the Clarinet. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education from the Colorado State University-Pueblo and a Master of Music degree from Pacific Lutheran University. In addition, he is a Nationally Certified Teacher of Music (NCTM) through the Music Teachers National Association.

He is also a member of the Music Educators National Conference and the Virginia Music Educators Association, the College Music Society, the National Association of College Wind and Percussion Instructors, the International Clarinet Association, the Virginia Music Teachers Association, the Peninsula Music Teachers Association, and the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum. In addition to his teaching, he has performed as a member of the Virginia Beach Symphony Orchestra (now named Symphonicity), The Tidewater Winds, and the Commonwealth Musical Stage Orchestra. He served as a clarinetist in the USAF Band Program for 23 years.
